How a phone number QR code works
The code contains a tel: link. When scanned, the phone opens its dialer with your number entered and the person presses call. It never calls automatically.
Use international format
Write the number with the plus sign and country code, for example +15551234567, so it dials correctly from any country. Spaces and punctuation are removed for you.
Where to put it
Phone codes suit vehicles, shop windows, "call to book" posters, property signs and flyers: anywhere typing a number is awkward. Make the code large enough for the distance people will scan from, since a window sign needs to be much bigger than a flyer. To let people save your full details instead of dialing, use a vCard code.
Test it like a customer
Scan the printed code with your own phone and check that the dialer shows the right number, then ask someone with a different phone model to try. Make sure the code is large enough for the real distance: if people must stand a few centimetres from a window sign to scan it, make it bigger. If the number is a landline, add your opening hours next to the code, because people scanning at night will reach voicemail. For a number that may change, see static vs dynamic QR codes.
Frequently asked questions
Does it call automatically?
No. The phone shows the dialer and the user confirms.
