How an email QR code works
The code contains a mailto: link. Scanning it opens the phone's mail app with a new message addressed to you, and with the subject and body already written if you filled them in. The person only has to press send.
Good uses for an email code
Feedback and support requests, event RSVPs, "report a problem" notices on equipment and job applications on posters all work well, because the code turns intent into a ready-made email. A prefilled subject helps you sort replies, for example "RSVP – Autumn party".
Tips and limits
Keep the prefilled text short, since long messages make the code denser. Special characters are encoded for you. The code opens whichever mail app the phone uses by default, and desktop barcode scanners may only read the text instead of opening a mail app. If you need to count how many people scan, use a dynamic code that points to a contact page.
Write the prefilled message well
Write the subject and body as if the sender typed them. A subject like "Booking request – table for 2" and a body that starts "Hi, I'd like to book…" gets better replies than an empty draft. Leave the details only the sender knows, such as the date, for them to fill in. Use a mailbox you monitor: printed codes outlive staff changes, so a shared address such as info@ is safer than a personal one.
